About this site

I'm Kurt Altrichter. Just Inherited is the publication I wish existed when my clients started bringing me their inheritance questions, and I realized nobody was writing the answers.

Quick context. I'm a fee-only fiduciary wealth advisor. Founder and Chief Investment Officer of Ivory Hill, LLC, based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I work with clients virtually all over the world. I hold the CRPS designation, and I'm an Investment Adviser Representative under Life Inc. Retirement Services.

Most of my client work involves business owners and high-net-worth individuals navigating major financial transitions. Inheritance is one of the biggest. And it's the one nobody got taught how to handle.

Who this is for

If you just inherited money, are about to inherit money, or are watching your parents start to organize their estate, this site is for you. The audience is specifically Gen X and Millennials who were or weren't born wealthy, whose parents were, and who are now staring down a transfer that's unprecedented in size: an estimated $84 trillion moving from Boomers to their heirs through 2045 according to Cerulli Associates.

You weren't born into wealth. Your parents' advisor sold them products, not advice. You're skeptical of finance content. You want plain English, real numbers, IRC sections, and someone who's actually managed money to write the answer instead of summarizing what the IRS website said.

What you'll find here

Long, fact-checked articles on:

  • The 10-year rule for inherited IRAs and how to actually plan around it
  • Step-up in basis on inherited stock and real estate
  • What to do (and not do) in the first 90 days
  • Trust vs will, and what your parents should have
  • Inherited Roth IRAs (the best asset to inherit, and why)
  • Probate timelines and what makes them long
  • Sudden wealth and how to not blow it

Every article is verified against primary sources at the time of publication. Every dollar figure, IRC section, and IRS rule gets checked against the live primary source. Where I think you should talk to your own CPA or attorney for your specific situation, I say so.

What this isn't

This isn't financial advice. The articles here are educational. I'm not your advisor unless you become a client of Ivory Hill. Tax laws change. Your situation is your situation. Talk to a fee-only fiduciary, a CPA, and an estate attorney before making decisions involving inherited assets.

Schedule a meeting to discuss your situation

If you're inheriting money and want to talk through your situation directly, that's what Ivory Hill exists for. Otherwise, the articles here are free, public, and meant to help you think clearly during a season when clear thinking is hard.
